Pomegranate natural dye extract is a substantive dye, meaning it does not need a mordant to attach itself to the fabrics and be light- and wash fast. However, the use of mordants can give an interesting play of hues. Used traditionally with curcuma for golden yellows in Persian carpets, known in India as Annar.

Shading tips:

No mordant warm golden yellows (already tannin-rich)
Alum brighter, clearer yellows
Tannin + alum deeper golden ochres
Iron (post-mordant, ~1%) moss greens → black
Copper (5%) antique greenish-yellows
Overdye with indigo sage to forest greens
Low temperatures keep the shade yellow
Longer dye bath time shifts yellows toward browns

WOF (Weight of Fiber): Use ~2% for medium shades; increase for deeper tones.

Mordanting: Not required, but alum or aluminum acetate can shift shades toward brighter yellows.

Temperature & Time:
– Dye at low temperatures to keep colors bright yellow.
– Longer immersion and higher heat will darken shades toward warm browns.

Post-mordanting: Treat with ~1% ferrous sulfate after dyeing for deep moss greens to black.
