Description
Aluminium triformate is a modern alternative mordant that produces bright, clear colours with less harshness on fibres compared to traditional alum. It is effective on both protein and cellulose fibres and works particularly well when paired with tannins. Many dyers appreciate it for achieving brilliance without compromising the handle of the fabric.

Dosage

5–10% WOF (weight of fibre).

Safety & handling

For textile dyeing and craft use only. Not for food, cosmetic, medical or household-cleaning use.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Powder and solutions may cause irritation.
Do not release concentrated product or spent mordant baths into drains, soil or waterways.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Avoid creating or breathing dust. Measure carefully in a well-ventilated work area and use suitable respiratory protection for fine particulates when dust cannot be avoided.
Wear suitable protective gloves, protective clothing and eye protection. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
Do not eat, drink or smoke while using this product. Use dedicated tools and containers that will never be used for food.
Store tightly closed, dry, clearly labelled and away from food, drink and incompatible materials.
Eyes: Rinse cautiously with clean water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if easy to do and continue rinsing. Seek urgent medical advice for persistent irritation, pain or impaired vision.
Swallowed or inhaled: Move to fresh air after inhalation. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a poison centre or medical professional; do not induce vomiting unless instructed.

Hot Mordanting Method

Dissolve aluminium triformate thoroughly in warm water.
Do not exceed 70 °C.
Add pre-wetted fibres and stir gently for even absorption.
Mordant for 30–45 minutes, then proceed with dyeing.

Bucket (Cold) Method

Make a 2% solution with (at most) 50 °C warm water. That is 20 grams of powder per liter of water.

Making 10 liter mordant (in a plastic bucket):

10 × 20 g = 200 g of Aluminium Formate are weighed and added to a bucket with warm (max 50ºC) water. Stir.

For smaller amounts (3-5 liter), the powder is dissolved in warm water (approx. 40-60 ºC) and then topped up with cold water.

The mordant can be used immediately.

Time in the mordant;

At 50ºC 1-2 hours. At room temperature 8 hours.

There is no upper limit for mordanting times, so you could keep your fibre in the bucket and leave it there until you need it.

The next batch of fabric can be mordanted in the same bucket. Times needed will extend each time you use up a bit of the mordant. Top up water if needed

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal tightly after use.
