Description

Sodium Dithionite (Na₂S₂O₄) — also known as Sodium Hydrosulfite — is a strong reducing agent widely used in preparing indigo vats. It is also used as a non-aggressive alternative to bleach for removing color from dyed fabrics and for whitening antique textiles.

Did you know? Sodium dithionite became a key player in the industrialization of indigo dyeing in the late 19th century, as it made reliable, large-scale reduction possible, transforming natural indigo use around the world.

CAS No.: 7775-14-6
EC Number: 231-890-0
Molar Mass: 174.11 g/mol
HS Code: 2831 10 00

Tips

  • Used only as a reducing agent, does not produce color itself.

  • Ensures indigo is soluble in the vat for even, deep blues.

  • Correct balance with soda ash controls vat pH and dye uptake.

  • Over-reduction may weaken the indigo color; adjust carefully.

Instructions for Use
  • Indigo vat formula (per 1 L water):
    – 5 g indigo
    – 5 g sodium dithionite
    – 12 g soda ash
  • Multiply quantities for the size of vat you need.
  • Dissolve powders thoroughly before immersing fibers.
  • Storage: Keep sealed in a cool, dry place (+2 °C to +30 °C).
  • Packaging: 250 g, double-sealed in plastic zip bags.

Physicochemical Information

  • Density: 2.5 g/cm³ (20 °C)
  • Melting Point: ~100 °C (decomposition)
  • pH (50 g/L solution, 20 °C): 5.5–8.5
  • Solubility: 250 g/L (slow decomposition in water)
