Description
The bark of Acacia mearnsii (black wattle) is rich in water-soluble tannins, making it an excellent and versatile natural dye. This concentrated extract belongs to the catechin tannin group, alongside cutch, quebracho, and tea leaves.
Did you know? Black wattle tannin is not only valued in textile dyeing but has also been historically used in leather tanning for its strength and durability. In eco printing, it is especially loved for producing deep, dark backgrounds.
Active dye compounds: Condensed tannins (min. 72%), flavonoids (chalcones ~6.2%), reds (~4.1%).
Shading Tips
- No mordant reddish-brown
- Alum warm golden-browns
- Iron (1–2% post-mordant) slate greys and deep blacks
