Description
Also known as copper chlorophyllin, chlorophyll green, natural green pigment.
Description
One of the very few ways to achieve a true, direct green on fabric is with chlorophyllin. This extract is produced from mulberry leaves using copper sulfate, which stabilises the pigment and greatly improves its lightfastness. The result is a dark green powder with a distinct aroma reminiscent of green tea.
Historical Note
Chlorophyllin has a long history of use as a pigment and ink. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was explored as a natural green colourant for inks, paints, and foodstuffs, and more recently, it has found its place in textile dyeing. For dyers, it offers something rare: a way to achieve authentic, plant-based greens without overdyeing.
Active dye component: copper chlorophyllin (derived from chlorophyll)

Shading Tips
- Alum: clear, lasting medium greens
- Copper sulfate: enhances the depth and durability of green shades
- Iron: deepens to muted olive or forest greens
- Overdye with indigo: strong blue-greens and teals
- Works particularly well on protein fibers like silk and wool
