Description
Also known as mehndi (Hindi/Urdu), hina (Arabic), Egyptian privet, mignonette tree.
Henna powder is made from the finely ground leaves of Lawsonia inermis, traditionally cultivated across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Best known for its role in body art, henna has also been used for centuries as a hair colorant and, of course, a textile dye, producing shades from golden yellows to deep browns.
Did you know? Ancient Egyptian textiles have been found dyed with henna, and the plant was also prized as a medicinal and ritual herb. In dyeing, henna is valued both for its color and its ability to reduce indigo vats, making it a versatile addition to any natural dye studio.
Active dye compounds: Lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone), apigenin, luteolin (flavonoid), tannins.

Shading Tips
- No mordant (substantive) → golden yellow to warm orange-browns
- Alum → brighter yellows with increased fastness
- Acid bath (cream of tartar, vinegar) → shifts colors toward orange
- Iron → olive browns and deeper, earthy tones
- Overdye with indigo → teals and forest greens
- Longer cooking → results in darker browns
