Description
These beautiful scarves are made from Bulkul Tassar silk in both warp and weft, giving them a thicker, richer texture than our Matka/Bulkul scarves. They are handspun and handwoven from unbleached spun silk, with natural twisted fringes and deep variegated tones of brown, caramel, and dark toffee.
Bulkul silk is spun from the peduncles of the Tussar silk moth cocoon. The moths feed on oak leaves, which helps give this silk its warm, earthy color palette. Because the silk is spun rather than reeled, the surface has a wonderfully tactile texture, with natural slubs, movement, and variation. No two scarves are exactly alike.
Honestly, I do not think these scarves need any dyeing or printing at all. They are beautiful just as they are. But for natural dyers, they are also a fantastic canvas: dyed with indigo, they develop a deep teal-green shade; dyed with madder, they become a textured earthy red.
Our Bulkul silk scarves are Ahimsa / cruelty-free peace silk, handspun and handwoven by artisans in a workshop where all production steps are done in-house, from cleaning and spinning to weaving.
These scarves do not need scouring. Before dyeing or printing, we recommend soaking them overnight in bran water to remove starch and impurities.
