Description

Also known as haritaki (Sanskrit), harad (Hindi), chebulic myrobalan.

Description
Myrobalan is prepared from the dried nuts of the Terminalia chebula tree, which grows abundantly in the foothills of the Himalayas. A classic tannin-rich dye, it has been used across India for centuries both as a standalone yellow dye and as a tannin base for mordanting cotton and other cellulose fibres. Its high tannin content makes it an essential material for dyers working with plant-based textiles.

Did you know? Myrobalan is one of the “Triphala” fruits in Ayurveda, traditionally valued for health remedies as well as its role in textile dyeing. In India, it remains a cornerstone in cotton dyeing traditions, particularly for creating deep blacks when combined with iron.

Main dye compound: Gallic acid, Ellagic acid, Chebulinic acid
CI Natural Yellow 10

Shading Tips

  • Alum (10–15%)  soft yellow to golden yellow
  • Higher WOF (25%+)  rich browns
  • Iron (post-mordant)  grey to black (traditional black recipe)
  • Overdye with indigo  beautiful teals and deep blue-greens
  • Copper  antique yellow-brown tones

Instructions for Use

WOF:
– 10% → light shades & basic mordanting
– 15% → medium depth, rich yellow
– 25%+ → darker browns

Mordanting:
– Often used as a first step for cellulose before alum/aluminum acetate
– Can serve both as a dye and tannin base, mordanting with alum will give brighter yellows.

Preparation: Dissolve or simmer powder in hot water, then add mordanted, well-wetted textiles

Fiber types: Protein and cellulose fibers

Packaging: Securely packed in a resealable zip bag for easy use and storage

Sourcing: Sustainable and fair trade
