Description

Also known as dyer’s weld, dyer’s rocket, and dyer’s mignonette.

Weld (Reseda Luteola),  is one of the oldest and most reliable natural yellow dyes in the world. Used across Europe and the Middle East since antiquity, weld is renowned for its brilliance, efficiency, and exceptional lightfastness. From sunny pale yellows to deep golden hues, weld has colored everything from medieval tapestries to 18th-century silks, and remains one of the clearest sources of yellow available to natural dyers today.

Our Weld Powder is carefully produced from Reseda plants selected for their high concentration of luteolin, the key yellow dye molecule. Weld is certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for use on organic fibers. Weld is also prized for mixing with indigo to create emerald and leafy greens.

Active dye components: luteolin (flavonoid)
CI Natural Yellow 2

Shading Tips

  • Alum (protein or cellulose): bright, clear yellows
  • Tannin + aluminum acetate: strong golden shades on cellulose
  • Copper (5%): deeper mustard yellow
  • Iron (1%): khaki greens and olive tones
  • Overdye with indigo: brilliant greens, from emerald to leaf tones
  • Slightly hard water enhances color; add chalk to brighten if water is soft

Instructions for Use

Instructions for Dyeing with Weld

Dosage

  • 10% WOF → light, bright yellow
  • 20–50% WOF → deep, saturated yellows
  • Traditional recipes: up to 80% WOF, but the bath can be reused for lighter shades.

Mordanting

  • Protein fibres (wool, silk): alum at 15% WOF
  • Cellulose fibres (cotton, linen): tannin + aluminium acetate, or aluminium triformate

Prepare the dye bath

  • Dissolve weld powder in hot water.
  • Simmer gently to extract the colour.

Dyeing

  • Add mordanted, pre-wetted textiles to the bath.
  • Stir gently for even absorption.
  • Maintain a simmer (not a boil) for 30–60 minutes, depending on depth of shade desired.

Finish

  • Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Wash gently with a mild soap if needed.
  • Dry out of direct sunlight.

Yield
100 g weld powder dyes:

  • ~1 kg of fibre light yellow
  • ~500 g of fibre deep yellow

Light fastness: excellent — weld is one of the most durable natural yellows.
