Description
Also known as Chinese rhubarb, Himalayan rhubarb, Turkey rhubarb.
Description
Rhubarb root powder is prepared from the dried roots of Rheum species, long valued as a traditional dye plant in China, Nepal, and across Central Asia. Rich in anthraquinones, rhubarb produces a versatile colour range from golden yellows to warm oranges and reds. It is easy to use on both protein and cellulose fibres, making it a favourite for dyers seeking a sustainable and renewable source of colour.
Historical Note
Rhubarb has been traded along the Silk Road for centuries, not only as a dye but also as a medicinal root in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine. In dyeing, its versatility made it a staple plant for producing yellows and rusts, as well as a useful tannin source to assist in mordanting.
