Description

Also known as Chinese rhubarb, Himalayan rhubarb, Turkey rhubarb.

Description
Rhubarb root powder is prepared from the dried roots of Rheum species, long valued as a traditional dye plant in China, Nepal, and across Central Asia. Rich in anthraquinones, rhubarb produces a versatile colour range from golden yellows to warm oranges and reds. It is easy to use on both protein and cellulose fibres, making it a favourite for dyers seeking a sustainable and renewable source of colour.

Historical Note
Rhubarb has been traded along the Silk Road for centuries, not only as a dye but also as a medicinal root in traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine. In dyeing, its versatility made it a staple plant for producing yellows and rusts, as well as a useful tannin source to assist in mordanting.

Main dye compound: Emodin, Chrysophanol
CI Natural Yellow 23

Shading Tips

  • Alum + vinegar (acidic bath)  bright yellow
  • Alum (neutral)  golden yellow
  • Alkaline modifier  brick red
  • Copper  deep golden tones
  • Iron (post-mordant)  green
  • Overdye with indigo  emerald greens

Instructions for Use

WOF: 5–10%

Mordanting: Works well on protein and cellulose fibers. No mordant is needed but alum recommended for clearer yellows.

Active dye compounds: Emodin (anthraquinone), chrysophanol, oxalic acids, tannins

Bath conditions: Adjust pH for shade variations — acidic for yellows, alkaline for reds

Efficiency: 100 g will dye ~1 kg of fiber
