Weld (Reseda luteola) Extract produces an excellent light- and washfast yellow. It yields a strong, clear yellow on its own and combines beautifully with indigo to create brilliant emeralds and leafy greens. Known historically as Dyer’s Weld, Dyer’s Rocket, or Dyer’s Mignonette, weld has been prized by dyers across Europe for centuries.

This professional-grade extract is grown and processed in Europe and approved as a dyestuff under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Highly concentrated, a little goes a long way, making it an economical choice for both fabric dyeing and print pastes (ideal for screen printing).

Shading Tips

Multiple dips produce softer yellow hues.
Overdye with indigo for a wide range of lively greens.
Post-mordant with 1% ferrous sulfate to shift weld’s clear yellow into warm khakis and olive greens.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal tightly after use.

Usage Guidelines

WOF (Weight of Fiber): 3–5%
– 5 g dyes ~100 g of fabric
Active dye component: Luteolin
Mordanting:
– Protein fibers: Alum 15% WOF
– Cellulose fibers: Pre-mordant with tannin, then aluminum acetate
Modifiers:
– Copper 5% WOF → deep mustard yellow
– Post-mordant with iron (1% ferrous sulfate) → khaki greens
Water Quality: Weld responds best to slightly hard water. Add ~2 tsp finely ground chalk per gallon if your tap water is soft.
