Description
This handwoven 100% cotton fabric carries with it the story of the weavers I visited in Java, Indonesia, during my travels in 2024. Each thread is locally grown, handspun, and handwoven, preserving textile traditions that have been passed down through generations.
It is rare today to find cotton that is still grown, spun, and woven so close to its source. The result is a beautiful natural cotton fabric with a soft, graceful drape and the quiet irregularity that only handwoven textiles can have.
In its natural oatmeal shade, unbleached and pure, this fabric is a blank canvas for your creativity. Use it for flowing skirts, comfortable pants, airy scarves, light garments, textile art, soft furnishings, or natural dye projects.
For dyeing or sewing preparation, scour before use with 5% soda ash.
Background note on the cotton
Indonesia has a long and varied cotton history, with different cotton types grown and used locally. Modern and documented cotton cultivation in Java includes Gossypium hirsutum, commonly known as upland cotton. PROSEA lists Gossypium hirsutum as “kapas mori” in Java, and textile sources also describe annual varieties of G. hirsutum grown in the Tuban region of Java. For this fabric, the most important part of the story is that the cotton is locally grown, spun, and woven in Java.
