Description
This handwoven basketweave Matka silk is a beautiful, substantial silk fabric with texture, movement, and presence.
Woven from thicker spun silk yarns made from broken or leftover Bombyx mori fibers, it has a distinct tactile surface while still remaining soft and fluid. The basketweave structure gives the fabric depth and body, but it is not stiff or heavy. It drapes well, holds shape beautifully, and has enough weight to feel special in garments and textile work.
The weave is made with two-ply threads passing over two weft threads, creating the recognizable basket structure. This gives the fabric a lively surface and a fuller hand than plain-woven silk, while still allowing it to move gracefully.
For natural dyers, this silk is especially rewarding. It takes natural dyes with excellent saturation, producing rich, clear color on a fabric that already has depth and visual interest. It can be used undyed, naturally dyed, botanical printed, or eco printed.
This is a mid-weight silk: light enough for clothing, but not sheer. It is a strong choice for dresses, jackets, skirts, wraps, statement garments, textile art, slow stitching, and special handmade projects.
