Description
Sandalwood — also known as Saunderswood, Sanderswood, and Padauk — produces beautiful pinks and reddish browns from its heartwood. Unlike the endangered Yellow Sandalwood and Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus), this variety is a sustainable option for natural dyers.
Did you know? Sandalwood belongs to the class of redwood dyes, which were prized throughout Asia and Europe for their warm hues. Because the dye compounds are insoluble, extraction requires a little more preparation than logwood or sappanwood.
Main dye compound: Santalin (Sandalwood / Padauk type)
