Description
Cutch (Acacia catechu) is a classic natural dye made from the heartwood of the cutch tree, valued for centuries across India and Southeast Asia. Rich in vegetable tannins (about 40%), cutch has been used not only for textile dyeing but also historically in medicine and tanning.
Did you know? Cutch is mentioned in Indian Ayurvedic texts and has been traded for centuries as both a dye and an astringent. In natural dyeing, it is celebrated for its warm reddish-browns, excellent light- and wash-fastness, and versatility on both cellulose and protein fibers.
Active dye compounds: Catechin, catechu-tannic acid, condensed tannins
CI Natural Brown 8
Shading Tips
- Alum → warm, brighter reddish-browns
- Iron (post-mordant) → grey-browns
- Copper → olive-browns
- Overdye with indigo → deep teals, smoky browns, or near-blacks
- Layered applications → rich earthy gradations; dye bath exhausts yield lighter shades
